Bozzy's Books

Boswell was known in the century and a half after his death in 1795 as the biographer of Dr Samuel Johnson, whom he immortalised in his Life of Samuel Johnson (1791), and in his earlier highly innovative Scottish travel narrative, the Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson, LL.D. (1785).  Before his Johnsonian works, Boswell was widely known in the press of his day as 'Corsica Boswell', having first achieved fame throughout Europe with his Account of Corsica (1768), the outcome of his daring visit to that rugged and little-visted island in 1765 to meet General Pasquale Paoli, leader of the patriot insurgents fighting for independence from Genoa. The extraordinary recovery and publication of his long-suppressed private journals and papers in the early twentieth century, especially the bestselling London Journal 1762-1763, brought him a renewed wave of fame in our time.
