The Bookshop in Wigtown, Scotland’s largest second-hand bookshop, is a bookworm's idyll - with thousands of books across nearly a mile of shelves, a real log fire, and Captain, the bookshop cat. Meanwhile across the Atlantic in Milwaukee the Boswell Book Company, opened by Goldin in 2009, also offers ‘gently used’ books in his wonderfully eclectic yet accessible bookstore.

Bythell, whose passion for bookselling is matched only by his sense of despair for its future, has become a cult figure whose high-profile fans include David Attenborough and Alan Bennett while Goldin is driven by the belief that independent booksellers exist to help you find a book ‘that will rock your world’.

Shaun Bythell's latest entry in his bestselling diary series, Remainders of the Day, is filled with the pernickety warmth and humour that has touched readers around the world, stuffed with literary treasures, hidden gems and incunabula, in equal parts preposterous and profound – as will be this talk!

In conversation with Roland Gulliver.
